The Harlan County High School girls soccer team closed its season in impressive fashion, reeling off three straight victories to take a 7-5 record into district tournament action.
“I hope we can carry this momentum into the district tournament,” Harlan County coach David Day said. “The girls have improved in a lot of ways. Our communication is better, our passing is better and our defense is working well as a unit. With that being said, we have to play to play more consistent when it counts, especially when it comes to finishing with the ball at the net. Our seniors need to step up and provide the leadership needed to get big wins over tougher opponents.”
The Lady Bears began the win streak with a 5-1 victory over Knox Central on Oct. 1. Hayley Key led Harlan County with two goals. Taylor Rowe, Abby Stephens and Gracen Anderson added one goal each. Amber Allen, Angel Davenport, Hannah Pittman, Rowe and Stephens had one assist each. Hailey Gaw had three goalkeeper saves, while Kali Blevins and Davenport added two each.
Stephens led HCHS to a 10-0 win over Bell County with five goals. Key had three goals. Abby Middleton and Rowe added one each. Allen led in assists with three. Rowe and Hannah Sturgill added two each. Anderson, Key and Stephens had one each. Blevins limited the Lady Cats to no goals as the goalkeeper.
