The Harlan Enterprise will publish local events in the community calendar free of charge as space allows. We do not accept submissions called in via phone. All submissions should be emailed to beth.key@harlandaily.com or dropped off at our office, 1512 Hwy. 421 South, Harlan. Submissions should be received no later than four business days prior to the event. If received in time, it will be published one or two days prior to the event. Announcements are also available at harlanenterprise.net.

The annual Tri-City Empty Stocking Fund auction will be held from 7 to 11 p.m. on Dec. 3 and 4 on the Cumberland campus of Southeast Kentucky Community & Technical College. Sign ups for food baskets will continue through Nov. 30 from 9 a.m. until noon and from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Loaves & Fishes, located 1417 E. Main Street in Cumberland or at Lynch City Hall (Lynch residents only). A road block will be held on Dec. 3 on Main Street in Cumberland. The Harlan Independent School Calendar Committee will meet at 3:30 p.m. on Nov. 28 in the board conference room. THURSDAY-SATURDAYS
Harlan County Christian School will present their annual Christmas Light Display, Harlan County Celebrates Christmas, at the Shriners Fairgrounds in Putney for the 2018 Christmas season. The display will be open to the public from 6-9:30 p.m. and can be viewed every Thursday, Friday and Saturday beginning Nov. 23. The display will also be open Dec. 19 (Wednesday). Sip on hot chocolate and munch on a candy cane while driving around the light display as many times as you like. Christmas music may be streamed through an FM channel on your car radio. The display is free to the public; however, donations to the Harlan County Christian School are greatly appreciated. The Shriner train will run (excluding Nov. 30 and Dec. 1) every Friday and Saturday, weather permitting. This year, the Shriner train will be running on Christmas Eve from 5 to 9:30 p.m. To sponsor a light display or for more information, contact the school at 606-574-1900.

Enjoy a story as Ms. Elizabeth presents captivating stories and fun crafts each Thursday at 1 and 3:30 p.m. at the Harlan County Public Library. Children of all ages are welcome.
NOV. 29
The LMU Women of Service Christmas Festival and Tree Lighting will be held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Nov. 29 held on the concourse of Tex Turner arena and will include lots of vendors, food and family fun. The Knoxville Symphony Chamber Orchestra will be performing a concert in the arena at 7 p.m. Admission to the concert is free with the donation of a food, hygiene, children’s clothing or toy item for Mission of Hope. After the concert, the annual tree lighting will be held outside near the arena.
NOV. 30
The Tri-City Christmas Parade will be held Nov. 30. “Songs of Christmas” is this year’s theme. This event will feature floats, music, Santa Claus and his elves. For more information, call the Cumberland Tourism Commission at 606-589-5812.
Movie Night at Benham Coal Miners’ Memorial Theater will begin at 7 p.m. on Nov. 30 featuring The Polar Express — come in your pajamas and have hot chocolate for a $2 donation.
DEC. 1, 2
The Southeast Community College Choir will perform two concerts this week. On Dec. 1 at 1 p.m., the choir will perform at the Church of the Resurrection, in Lynch and on Dec. 2 at 3 p.m., a performance will be given at Christ Episcopal Church in Harlan. Both concerts are free and open to the public. Christmas music will ring forth in these hallowed halls, such works as “Christmas Day” by Gustave Holtz; “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring,” by JS Bach, in addition to works by Monteverdi and others. The sixth annual Christmas at the Center celebration will be held Dec. 1 at the Harlan Center featuring pictures with Santa, an ice skating, concessions, games, inflatables, vendors and entertainment. For more information, call the Harlan Center at 606-573-4156.

A Jingle Bell Jog 5K will begin at 9 a.m. on Dec. 1 in downtown Harlan.
The 36th annual Victorian Christmas in Cumberland Gap will be held Dec. 1 Father Christmas rides into town at 10 a.m., Then there will be over 200 treats given out to children in Festival Park on Colwyn Avenue.
Mountain Santa’s tradition will continue this year through his son, Jordan Howard. A road block will be held at the Wallins stop sign on Dec. 1.

Celebrate the Yuletide season as Pine Mountain Settlement School presents their annual Nativity Play at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Dec. 9 in the chapel. Doors open 30 minutes prior to each performance for special music.

The American Red Cross is seeking volunteers with flexible schedules to respond to single and multi-family home fires in the Lake Cumberland service area which includes Casey, Adair, Cumberland, Clinton, Russell, Pulaski, Wayne, McCreary, Whitley, Laurel, Clay, Knox, Bell and Harlan counties. Red Cross Disaster Action Team (DAT) volunteers respond to assist families with shelter, support and access to basic needs immediately following a home fire – often arriving on scene even as the fire is still burning.
