The Harlan County Fiscal Court approved a grant from Fahe Consulting to potentially build a new Sunshine Fire Station. Harlan County Judge-Executive Dan Mosley said during Tuesday’s special-called meeting that the proposed grant could get the project started.
The Sunshine Fire Station is currently located in the old armory building below CAA. The station serves all of District 4, part of District 1 and a fragment of District 2.
“This is an inconvenience for the fire station and for CAA,” Mosley said.
Fahe Consulting proposed a grant of $7,000 to get the project started. Fahe handles different aspects of home ownership and community development, according to their website. Their departments include mortgage lending, community lending, capital, strategic programs, membership and loan servicing.
“Through our Network of 50+ locally-rooted nonprofits, we have served 535,000 people, made $784.8 million in direct investments to the region, and achieved a total cumulative financial impact of $1.43 billion,” Fahe says on its website. “Fahe is on a mission to eliminate persistent poverty in Appalachia.”
Fahe’s grant would allow for a new fire station to be built on county land across from Meade Tractor. The land was filled in order to build the new fire station. Before construction, the land must be surveyed again to determine if it has been raised from the flood plain.
A new fire station could mean faster response times for the area and more convenience for the fire station’s staff.
Following further discussion, Mosley recommended accepting Fahe’s proposed grant for a new Sunshine Fire Station. The magistrates passed a motion for the project after Mosley’s recommendation.
