Bears hit 18 3s in summer win at Williamsburg

WILLIAMSBURG — While there are some question marks surrounding the Harlan County Black Bears heading into the 2020 season next fall, it appears perimeter shooting isn’t one of them.
The Bears showed off their shooting skills Friday by upsetting Williamsburg, expected to be one of the 13th Region’s top teams next year, HCHS hit 18 3-pointers in a 95-68 rout of the Jackets.
Senior guard Taylor Spurlock hit 13 of 19 shots overall, including three 3-pointers, and finished with 31 points to lead the Bears. Eighth-grade point guard Trent Noah hit six 3-pointers in a 20-point effort. Tyler Cole hit two 3-pointers and scored 14 points and Jackson Huff connected on four in adding 12 points. Jacob Wilson contributed 11 points on three 3-pointers. Josh Turner added seven points and six rebounds.
Cole poured in 28 points in a 61-50 victory over McCreary Spurlock. Wilson added 18 and 15 points, respectively.
The Harlan County junior varsity team improved to 3-1 by defeating McCreary Central 53-36 and Williamsburg 63-39.
Hunter Helton scored 15 points to lead the Bears against McCreary. James Gray tossed in eight, followed by Cameron Lester with six, Jonah Swanner and Tristan Cooper with five each, Daniel Carmical and Josh Sergent with four each, Bradley Halcomb with three, Jeremiah Clem with two and Dalton Hicks with one.
Helton and Hicks each scored 10 against Williamsburg. Carmical added nine. Lester and Cooper contributed six each. Swanner and Clem each added five. Gray scored two.
Harlan County (4-1) will play at Whitley County on Monday and will be at home Tuesday with scrimmages starting at 3 p.m.
