Lady Dragons split four scrimmages

A day of summer basketball Thursday at Harlan High School featured six teams and seven varsity games, including four for the host Lady Dragons, who won two and lost two.
Harlan opened the day with a 34-21 win over Barbourville, led by 13 points from senior forward Natalee King and eight from junior forward Kaylee Leslie. Angel Wynn scored six, while Ella Karst added four and Emma Owens tossed in three.
Harlan led 2-0 midway through the opening half as both offenses struggled early before Leslie heated up inside with three baskets as the Lady Dragons built an 18-6 halftime lead.
Barbourville cut into the deficit in the second half before a 3-pointer by Owens followed by baskets from King and Wynn put it out of reach.
Harlan fell 37-29 to Bell County. King scored 11 and Wynn added 10 for the Lady Dragons. Owens tossed in four. Karst and Alli Thompson added two each.
Wynn scored 11 as Harlan defeated Buckhorn 43-27. Aymanni Wynn contributed nine. King tossed in seven. Thompson and Karst added four each. Peighton Jones, Owens, Leslie and Kate Cornett added two each.
King scored 13 to lead Harlan in a 42-21 loss to Letcher Central, last year’s 14th Region runner-up squad. Wynn scored four. Owens and Karst added two each.
In other varsity games, Letcher Central defeated Leslie County 47-38, Barbourville downed Buckhorn 50-30, Leslie County overpowered Buckhorn 44-25 and Bell County defeated Leslie County 53-35.
Harlan (3-3) is scheduled to travel to Bell County on Monday.
