The Harlan Enterprise will publish local events in the community calendar free of charge as space allows. We do not accept submissions called in via phone. All submissions should be emailed to beth.key@harlandaily.com or dropped off at our office, 1512 Hwy. 421 South, Harlan. Submissions should be received no later than four business days prior to the event. If received in time, it will be published one or two days prior to the event. Announcements are also available at harlanenterprise.net.

Harlan Christian Church’s second annual Summer Under the Stars will be held on Friday nights throughout the summer on the courthouse lawn in downtown Harlan. Movies will be shown on an inflatable outdoor movie screen starting at approximately 9 p.m. There will be free popcorn, nachos, snow cones and more. The schedule includes: June 28, Dumbo; July 5, Mary Poppins Returns; July 12, Moms’ Night Out; July 19, Pirates of the Caribbean, Dead Men Tell No Tales; July 26, Cars 3; Aug. 2, Ralph Breaks the Internet.
JUNE 29
Motorcycles on Main, a bike show and benefit for 3-year-old Gunnar Simpson (who has Trisomy 18 or “Edwards Syndrome”) will be held from 1 to 9 p.m. on June 29 on Main Street in Pineville. All riders and motorcycle clubs are welcome. There will also be inflatables, food, music, crafts and vendors. The cost is $20 for a spot in the show. Show beings at 2 p.m. — judging and awards at 6 p.m. Best overall bike will lead a parade at 6:30 p.m. with music and food continuing until 9 p.m. To enter your bike or reserve a vendor spot, call 606-499-6811 or 606-499-6810 (leave message or text). Guided hike tours will be hosted to explore some of the most beautiful and unique locations in Harlan County. Sign up early — approximately 20 participants will be accommodated per hike. Participants will also receive a limited edition T-shirt. The city of Cumberland will celebrate Independence Day beginning at 7 p.m. on July 3 with a live band, Big Daddy and the Heat, and vendors at the gazebo in downtown. Fireworks will begin at 10 p.m. For more information, call 606-589-5812.

This year’s Fun Filled Fourth of July Fest will take place from 4 to 10 p.m. on July 4 in downtown Harlan around the Harlan Center, hosted by Harlan Tourism and sponsored by Don’s Super Saver. The celebration includes a 5K (9 a.m.), parade (5 p.m.), live music, vendors (open at 4 p.m.), food, fireworks and more. Fireworks will be shot from the same location as last year, so the best views will be from downtown around the Harlan Center. For more information, contact the Harlan Center at 606-573-4156.
The city of Evarts The city of Evarts Fourth of July celebration will be held on July 4. The Celebration Parade lineup will be at 6:30 p.m. behind Evarts High School and the parade begins at 7:30 p.m. Fireworks will begin at dark or 9:30 p.m. behind Dairy Hut. The annual Lynch 4th of July Parade will begin at 10 a.m. on July 4. Line up from 9 to 9:45 a.m. at Lynch Church of God. Parade will pull out at 10 a.m. and head west and end at West Main Park with a brief patriotic ceremony, trophy presentation, free water, hot dogs and watermelon (while supplies last).

Brittains Creek Missionary Baptist Church in Kenvir will host Vacation Bible School, Giddyup Junction, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. July 8-12 with Bible lessons, crafts, games, puppet shows and a cookout each night. All ages are welcome, but ages 4 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Explorers camp, a weeklong reading camp, will be held from 8 a.m. to noon July 8-12 at Pine Mountain Settlement School for all ages. Students receive instruction in reading basics from trained instructors and enjoy recreational activities with Pine Mountain staff and a host of volunteers. The Cawood Ledford Boys & Girls Club will host educational and fun day camps this summer. Each week is designed to provide Summer learning opportunities parents want and kids crave. Camps are for all youth ages 6-14. Camps are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with breakfast and lunch provided daily. Each camp is $50 per week for the first child and $25 per week for each additional sibling. Early drop-off is available after 8:30 a.m. for an additional $5 per pay. The Cumberland Valley Chapter of the Kentucky Public Retirees (KPR) will meet on July 9 at David’s Steak House in Corbin. Mealtime will begin at 11:30 a.m. with the meeting to follow. The guest speaker will be Larry Totten, statewide president of Kentucky Public Retirees. Retirees (and spouses) receiving retirement benefits from KERS, CERS or SPRS are welcome to attend. Camp Blanton Day Camp for boys and girls ages 8 to 13 will be held July 15-18 and July 22-25. There will be swimming, boating, hiking, archery, life-saving skills, arts and crafts and more. With Love From Harlan, a local nonprofit organization, is now providing weekend meals (except the last Sunday of each month) at Christ Church in Harlan, across from Harlan High School. Meals are served from 2-3 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

Appalachian Mountain Ecology Summer Camp will be held July 21-26 at Pine Mountain Settlement School for teens (14-17 years old). In this summer overnight camp, students will work with researchers to investigate one of its most diverse and secretive inhabitants—salamanders and explore their relationship to water quality in the region. The James A. Cawood High School 1980s Reunion will be held from 2 to 10 p.m. on July 27 at Camp Blanton. Free to all alumni, faculty and staff that attended or worked at JACHS at any time during the 1980s. There will be a potluck dinner and raffle on Saturday during the reunion. The American Red Cross is seeking volunteers with flexible schedules to respond to single- and multi-family home fires in the Lake Cumberland service area, which includes Harlan, Bell, Whitley and Knox counties. Red Cross Disaster Action Team volunteers respond to assist families with shelter, support and access to basic needs immediately following a home fire – often arriving on scene even as the fire is still burning.
