Caleb Ashley opened his senior golf season in memorable fashion Monday by winning the season-opening tournament at the Wasioto Winds golf course in Pineville.
Ashley shot a three-under par 33 to defeat Bell County’s Andrew Caldwell by four strokes. Middlesboro’s Tyler Harris was third with a 38 and Knox Central’s R.J. Osborne was fourth with a 39.
“Caleb played one of the best rounds of golf I’ve ever seen him play,” said Harlan County coach Greg Lewis. “His ball striking was pristine. He was able to place the ball exactly in the right spots off the tee, out of the fairway, and when he did miss a shot he was able to save par. He was one tee shot and a few missed putts away from shooting a very low round. With a continued focus and work ethic, Caleb has an opportunity to have a great season.”
Knox Central won the team competition with an overall score of 175. Middlesboro was second with a 208. Whitley County was third at 220. Harlan County, Whitley County, Bell County and Knox Central did not have the four golfers required to qualify for the team title.
Alex Creech was second for Harlan County with a 52. Matt Lewis shot a 54.
“Matt Lewis hit the ball very well, he just wasn’t able to score as well Monday. Alex Creech responded well in his first match with some great shots. They both finished in the top ten of the event,” Lewis said. “Both Matt and Alex are going to put up some great scores very soon.”
