Commodores win shootout over Skins

Down 26-20 early in the third quarter on Thursday, visiting Perry Central scored on successive drives to take the lead for good on the way to a 36-26 victory at Cumberland in seventh- and eighth-grade football action.
The Commodores turned to running back Austin Riley after falling behind and he covered 53 yards in three plays, going in from the 18 with 6:48 left in the third quarter. Riley added the two-point conversion for a 28-26 lead.
After stopping the Redskins on downs, Perry drove for another score on runs by Riley and Phoenix Eddington. Hayden Canady connected with Marcus Robinson for a 9-yard TD pass with 2:10 left in the third period. Riley closed the scoring with a two-point conversion.
Cumberland drove deep into Perry territory late in the game with the help of a 24-yard pass from Shawn Carroll to Jonah Mumford, but the Commodores held.
Aiden Craig had an interception for the Skins with 1:35 left in the game.
Mumford gave the Redskins an early lead with a 23-yard touchdown run on a reverse on their opening drive.
Riley went in from the 9 and added the two-point conversion to put Perry ahead.
Landon McLain answered by returning the kick 70 yards for a touchdown to put the Redskins ahead 12-8.
Canady teamed with Robinson for a 24-yard TD pass with 7:03 left in the half to give Perry a 14-12 lead.
Eddington scored on a 6-yard run with 2:41 to play in the half. Ashton Adams stopped Canady on the two-point attempt.
Cameron Anderson and Darius Akal each had long runs to set up an 8-yard touchdown pass from Carroll to Mumford with 41.7 seconds left in the half. Carroll’s two-point conversion tied the game at 20 at halftime.
A 63-yard touchdown run by Anderson on the first play of the second half gave Cumberland a brief 26-20 lead.
Cumberland (3-6) will travel to Jenkins on Tuesday and play host to New Harlan on Thursday.

Perry Central won 28-6 in fifth- and sixth-grade action.
Cumberland (0-8) scored on a 15-yard run by Sedrick Washington. Landon Huff teamed with Kaden Adams for a 60-yard gain to set up the touchdown.
