A Cawood man was recently served with a warrant for his arrest after facing charges for first-degree unlawful imprisonment and first-degree wanton endangerment.
Dennis Grubbs, 33, of Cawood, was arrested by Harlan County Sheriff’s Department deputies on Sept. 20 after a warrant was issued stemming from a complaint. The warrant was obtained by deputy Chris Brewer.
Grubbs was later lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center on a $5,000 full-cash bond.
Grubbs was also arrested by Kentucky State Police troopers on June 11.
According to the citation, KSP troopers and Harlan City Police Department officers were dispatched to the Mount Aire Motel after allegedly receiving a 911 call of someone screaming from inside one of the rooms. KSP Post 10 later received another call from Teresa Wells, who said she was in Room 48 with Grubbs and he was holding her against her will. Wells also advised police that Grubbs was armed with a knife and a gun.
Upon arrival, police were able to successfully remove Wells from the motel room. Wells told police that Grubbs was inside the room doing harm to himself and attempting suicide. Wells added she was assaulted by Grubbs, who allegedly hit her in the head multiple times.
Reports state police attempted to make contact with Grubbs and told him to come out with his hands up. After a short standoff, Grubbs exited the room and was taken into custody. Grubbs allegedly screamed at police, telling them to shoot him, after he was placed in handcuffs.
While being escorted to a police cruiser, Grubbs began resisting, which resulted in an officer pushing him to the ground. Grubbs was again escorted to the cruiser when he began resisting again and was held against the cruiser.
Grubbs allegedly continued to fight and resist arrest, getting blood on the officers’ uniforms, when he fell to the ground and kicked a KSP trooper in the leg. Police were able to regain control of Grubbs and place him in the back of a cruiser, where he continued to scream and hit the doors and cage of the vehicle.
Police also reported the motel room to be destroyed, stating Grubbs had gotten blood all over the room and pulled paneling off the walls. Police were able to locate a revolver inside the bathroom and a box-cutting knife beside the front door.
Grubbs was transported to Harlan ARH to receive medical attention and was admitted into the psych department to be held until release to the Harlan County Detention Center.
Grubbs was charged with first-degree unlawful imprisonment, first-degree wanton endangerment, first- and third-degree criminal mischief, resisting arrest, third-degree assault (police/probation officer), fourth-degree assault (domestic violence; minor injury), possession of firearm by convicted felon and menacing.
Grubbs was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center on a $5,000 full-cash bond.
