Ponder powers Jackets in a first-round rout

Dalton Ponder passed for four touchdowns in the first half Friday and five for the game as Williamsburg rolled in the first round of the Class A playoffs with a 48-8 win over visiting Harlan.
Ponder connected on seven of 10 passes for 81 yards in the opening half, including an interception. Devonte Powell had three receiptions of 17, 23 and 13 yards. Gaven Thomas caught a TD pass from Ponder for a 7 yards. Powell also had a 35-yard punt return for his third touchdown.
Anthony Snell had a 12-yard TD run.
Williamsburg added five of six extra points in the first half as the Yellow Jackets led 41-0 at halftime.
Ponder had a touchdown pass in the third quarter and the extra points made it 48-0.
The Green Dragons avoided the shutout as Jayden Ward scored a touchdown and added the two-point conversion. The Dragons were without junior quarterback Ethan Clem duesickness. Connor Scearse and Juan Bynum both returned from injuries, but the Yellow Jackets were too much to overcome, with two Harlan fumbles in the first half.
Harlan (1-10) said goodbye to five seniors: John Eldridge, Will Howard, Jacob Howard, Jacob Surber and Will McCarthy.
Williamsburg (9-2) returns to action Friday at home against the Lynn Camp/Pineville winner.
