Harlan rallies to edge Barbourville, sweep tourney

The Harlan Lady Dragons shot 13 percent from the field in the first half of Saturday’s finals of the E.R. “Doc” Gray Classic and found themselves down by 10 points. The Lady Dragons opened the third quarter by missing seven straight shots before slowly starting to fight from behind on the way to a 34-32 win.
A 3-pointer by Angel Wynn and one of two free throws by Aymanni Wynn allowed Harlan to cut the deficit to 22-14. Two baskets by Barbourville’s Bri Gallagher gave the Lady Tigers a 26-14 advantage.
In the final three minutes of the third period, Harlan closed with a 6-0 run, led by a trey from Angel Wynn and a basket by Aymanni Wynn to make it a 26-20 advantage.
A 3-pointer by Ella Karst and a jumper by Armanni Wynn cut thel lead to two, 30-28, with 4:10 remaining.
Another trey by Angel Wynn gave Harlan the lead at the 3:32 mark. Abby Smith’s basket with 20 seconds left, tied the game at 32-32. It remained even until Angel Wynn’s buzzer-beating basket.
“Tonight, we fought and competed until the final buzzer, as did Barbourville,” said Harlan coach Tiffany Hamm. “Teams like that are fun to coach.”
Barbourville outrebounded the Lady Dragons 34-33.
Angel Wynn powered Harlan (5-3) with 18 points. Alli Thompson grabbed nine rebounds while Aymanni Wynn added eight boards.
Laura Wynn grabbed 13 rebounds for the Lady Tigers. Gallagher added 11 rebounds.
“I’m proud of the effort on the boards and defensively with giving up so much size,”said Hamm.
Harlan (5-3) will play Clarkrange (Tenn.) on Friday at 10 a.m. in the Innisfree Hotels Classic in Florida.
Barbourville (4-6) plays host to Clay County on Friday.

Emma Beason scored 18 points as Claiborne (Tenn.) defeated Jenkins 57-52 in other tournament action.
Taylor Pressnell scored 13 points and Skylar Cook added 11 for the 6-7 Lady Bulldogs. Trinity Jones had five points. Macie Sumner scored four. Hailey Sexton, Kelsey Muncy and Kaylee Cox each added two.
Jerrica Thacker paced the 2-6 Lady Cavaliers with a game-high 26 points. Lindsey Rose added 14. Sameria Meade tallied eight points. Alexis Richie and Skye Brown each scored two.
