A man from Canton, N.Y., was recently arrested after a pursuit in Cumberland ended with a vehicle crashing into an O’Reilly’s truck in Harlan.
Ian Burnham, 28, was arrested by Cumberland Police Department officer Tyler Hensley on Jan. 23.
According to the citation, Hensley attempted to stop Burnham after allegedly observing him weaving across all lanes of traffic on U.S. 119, continuing to do so after failing to stop when lights and sirens were activated.
During the pursuit, Burnham allegedly ran other vehicles off the road and attempted to strike another officer’s vehicle before crashing into the rear of an O’Reilly’s truck on U.S. 421. A total of eight officers were involved in the chase.
Hensley said Burnham smelled of alcohol and possessed a pipe with residue in his pocket, adding his eyes were dilated and he was very aggressive. Burnham also refused his right to an attorney and requested tests, according to the citation.
Unconfirmed reports add the vehicle contained rounds of ammo that were set off after the crash when the vehicle caught fire.
Burnham was charged with reckless driving, operation of motor vehicle while under the influence of drugs/alcohol, first-degree fleeing or evading police (motor vehicle), first-degree wanton endangerment and possession of drug paraphernalia.
