While missing nine games midway through the season due to what was first thought of as a season-ending knee injury, South Laurel senior guard Ally Collett’s chance of repeating as the 13th Region Coaches Association Player of the Year appeared slim. Collett, however, recovered quicker than expected and made it back in time to lead the Lady Cardinals to a 13th Region Tournament title.
Collett averaged 18.4 points per game for the 27-6 Lady Cards, repeating as regional player of the year in the process. Collett will continue her career at Western Kentucky University.
Sharing the honor as coach of the year were Bell County’s David Teague and North Laurel’s Eddie Mahan. Teague led Bell County to a 25-5 record and ended Harlan County’s three-year run as 52nd District champions.
