Lady Bears score 3 in 8th to down Leslie County, end losing streak

Harlan County scored three runs in the eighth inning to win 6-3 on Tuesday at Leslie County.
The game marked the return of sophomore Alexis Adams from a leg injury and she responded with 3 2/3 innings for the win as she gave up one run on two hits with nine strikeouts and one walk. Alyssa Sherman started and gave up two runs on six hits with five strikeouts and one walk in three innings. Maddie Fields allowed one hit with one strikeout and one walk in 1 1/3 innings.
Jade Burton led the HCHS offense with a double and single. Madison Blair and Sherman singled twice each with Blair driving in three runs. Halanah Shepherd had a double. Raegan Landa, Aviya Halcomb, Adams, Braylen Gilley and Carmen Thomas added one single each.
The 6-8 Lady Bears play host to Middlesboro on Thursday.

Harlan County dropped four of five games in the Ripken Experience tournament at Pigeon Forge, Tenn., during spring break.
The Lady Bears pounded out 23 hits against Washington County, led by Braylen Gilley with four hits. Alyssa Sherman, Madison Blair, Carmen Thomas and Jade Burton added three hits each. Kendall Brock, Aviya Halcomb and Halanah Shepherd had two hits each. Raegan Landa added one hit each. Landa, Gilley and Sherman each had inside-the-park homers. Burton tripled twice and Shepherd tripled once. Gilley had a double.
Maddie Fields made her high school pitching debut in the game, giving up no hits while striking out three in 1 1/3 innings. Shepherd earned the win as she gave up five earned runs on eight his with eight strikeouts and four walks in 5 1/3 innings. Sherman recored one out.
Burton, Halcomb and Madison Blair each had two hits in an 11-1 loss to Madison Southern. Gilley, Thomas and Sherman added one hit each.
Sherman gave up nine runs (seven earned) on nine hits with two strikeouts and four walks in six innings. Shepherd allowed two runs (one earned) on one hits with one strikeout in one inning.
Halcomb led the Lady Bears in an 11-8 loss to Nicholas County with two triples. Shepherd added a triple and single. Burton had a double and single. Sherman, D’Anna Cook, Gilley, Blair, Brock and Fields added one single each.
Sherman, Fields and Shepherd all saw mound duty.
The Lady Bears were held hitless in an 18-0 loss to a powerful Harrison County squad. Fields pitched a complete game with two strikeouts and two walks.
Sherman had the only hit for HCHS in a 19-1 loss to Allen County-Scotsville. Fields gave up four unearned runs on two hits in 1 2/3 innings. Sherman recorded the final four outs.
