Traffic moved along U.S. 421 at Cranks recently as workers reconstructed a half-mile section of the road. This project, at a cost of $802,000, is designed to eliminate chronic flooding along the popular route that stretches to the Virginia state line. The half-mile section, which is expected to be finished this week, is part of a 13-mile reconstruction project that residents have been wanting for a decade. Funding was originally authorized during the Patton Administration, but only approximately 10 miles of U.S. 421 were improved — leaving the remaining 3.6 miles untouched since 2003. Work will take place between milepoints 3.2 and 3.8, from the foot of Crummies Mountain to Cranks Creek going toward the Virginia state line. Once the newly-funded half-mile project is complete, only 3.2 miles will remain to finish the 13-mile U.S. 421 corridor project to Virginia.
