Harlan County competed in its second meet of the season recently at the Wasioto Winds course in Pineville.

Matt Lewis, a freshman, led Harlan County with a fourth-place score of 44, 10 strokes behind tournament champ Tyler Harris, of Middlesboro. Pineville’s Braxton Caldwell was second with a 35, and Middlesboro’s Nick Cox was third with a 42.

“I’m really proud of my guys. They are working very hard and getting better every time out,” Harlan County coach Greg Lewis said. “Matt played great today. He struck the ball well and drove it very well. A couple missed putts and a couple untimely missed shots kept him from having an exceptionally low round. He is just going to continue getting better and better with every swing. His scores are going to keep falling.

Harlan County senior Caleb Ashley, the individual winner in a tournament last week, finished seventh with a 47. Alex Creech, a seventh grader, shot a 54 to place 10th.

“Alex hit the ball very well. His putter gave him a little higher score than he really deserved. Just like with Matt, he is getting better every time out and is becoming more and more comfortable with high school golf. Very soon we are going to have some really good scores from Alex,” Lewis said. “Caleb struggled a bit today. He hit some very solid shots but just seemed to find himself in some tough spots throughout the round. He made some tough putts and pulled off some difficult shots. He just had one of those days when he couldn’t score very well. He will be back shooting some really low scores very soon. As a group I am very excited with where we are. We are better at this point than I thought we would be. We are going to continue working hard, and I expect the scoring to get better and better as we go throughout the season.”
