During a meeting with Harlan County Judge-Executive Dan Mosley on Thursday, Kentucky State Treasurer Allison Ball announced over $2.2 million in unclaimed property is waiting to be claimed by residents of Harlan County.

“The Kentucky State Treasurer is responsible for managing unclaimed property,” Mosley said. “That can be money, items that come out of safety deposit boxes, it can be a variety of things and Harlan County has a lot of unclaimed property.”

Ball handed Mosley a list of Harlan Countians who have unclaimed property valuing more than $500. Mosley plans to use the list to help the individuals get in contact with the treasurer’s office and receive their claims.

“We’re going to attempt to try and track these people down that have unclaimed property and help them go after what is rightfully theirs,” Mosley said.

Mosley said he applauds the work Ball has completed in office so far and said “she’s done a great job” by already returning more than $90 thousand in unclaimed property to Harlan residents alone.

“One of my favorite things to do as treasurer is return people’s money to them,” Ball said in a press release. “Since taking office, I have returned a record amount of unclaimed property and I believe this local partnership will help maximize efforts to return even more unclaimed property to Kentuckians.”

Since taking office, Ball has returned more unclaimed property in a three-year period than any treasurer in Kentucky history. To date, she has returned more than $83 million in unclaimed property to Kentuckians, as stated in the press release.
