Gilbert sparks Cats in victory over Dragons

CORBIN — With Dalton Cook and several other stars from last year’s 10-2 Lynn Camp squad graduating, the Wildcats faced a playmaker void coming into the 2019 season and that had cost them in a recent four-game losing streak that included a pair of one-point defeats.

Spencer Gilbert, a junior receiver and cornerback, filled that void on Friday as he scored three touchdowns and intercepted two passes in the Wildcats’ 32-20 victory over visiting Harlan.

“He had an outstanding game tonight. He did what he had to do and made a lot of big plays,” Lynn Camp coach Allen Harris said. “He’s definitely one of our biggest leaders. He is capable of playing many roles — receiver, quarterback, corner — and does a lot for us. I also thought Chase Brown played a big game for us.”

Lynn Camp (3-4 overall, 1-1 district) ran for 207 yards and quarterback Tyler Smith completed five of nine passes for 207 yards, including two touchdowns through the air and one on the ground. Brown also had a touchdown run.

Harlan (1-7 overall, 0-2 district) was carried on offense by junior quarterback Ethan Clem, who ran for 207 yards on 30 carries and all three Harlan touchdowns out of the Wildcat alignment.

The Dragons came into the game hoping to control the ball and the clock and succeeded with a nine-minute drive to open the game.

With the scoreless tie stretching into the second quarter, Gilbert grabbed a Smith pass and then broke free for an 81-yard touchdown play when two Harlan defenders collided.

Harlan answer with a five-play drive that featured a 23-yard pass, the Dragons’ only completion of the night, to tight end Jon Eldridge. Clem went in from the 5 to tie the game with four minutes left in the half.

Lynn Camp followed with a six-play drive capped by Brown’s 24-yard touchdown run around left end. Luke Ledington’s extra point put the Wildcats ahead 13-6 with less than two minutes left in the half.

The Dragons elected to go to the air with time winding down and it turned out to be a mistake as Gilbert picked off a Clem pass. The Wildcats got the ball on the Harlan 21 after a personal foul penalty on the play. Smith and Gilbert teamed on a.14-yard touchdown with 15 seconds to play in the half. Ledington’s second extra point pushed the lead to 20-6.

Clem brought the Dragons back with two touchdown runs in the third quarter to tie the game once again.

Jeremiah Mills recovered a fumble to stop Lynn Camp’s first possession of the third quarter on the Harlan 15. Backed up near their own end zone, the Dragons were forced to punt but a roughing the kicker penalty gave Harlan life. Clem covered 42 yards in three runs and went in from the 7 with 5:18 left in the third quarter.

An Eldridge interception set up the next score as Clem broke free down the right sideline for a 53-yard TD run that tied the game at 20.

Gilbert broke the tie with a 33-yard TD run with 10:42 left, then picked off another Clem pass to set up Smith’s 25-yard touchdown run with 7:25 to play.

Harlan ran off most of the clock with a drive that ended near midfield when Lynn Camp made a stop on fourth down. The Dragons were limited to only one first down and 13 yards of offense in the final period.

Both teams conclude district play Friday as Harlan travels to Pineville and Lynn Camp plays at Williamsburg.
