The Harlan Enterprise will publish local events in the community calendar free of charge as space allows. We do not accept submissions called in via phone. All submissions should be emailed to emily.perkins@harlandaily.com or dropped off at our office, 1512 Hwy. 421 South, Harlan. Submissions should be received no later than four business days prior to the event. If received in time, it will be published one or two days prior to the event. Announcements are also available at harlanenterprise.net.
There will be no Harlan Public Library Bookmobile runs until proper repairs are made to the vehicle. The Enterprise will post an updated schedule when the Bookmobile is up and running again.
FEB. 29
Come help raise money for victims of recent flooding in Harlan County at the Harlan County Flood Relief Concert! The show is free, but donations will be taken at the door and will be sent to With Love from Harlan. Multiple vendors will be set up. Doors open at 5 p.m. with music by L.I.P.S., The Virginia Creepers, Baghead, Apartment 13 and more starting at 6 p.m. Free drinks and pizza will also be available!
Harlan Walmart staff invites everyone to celebrate Best of Baby Month at their free in-store event on Feb. 29 from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.

The Miss Southeast Pageant will be held March 6 at 6 p.m. at the SKCTC Cumberland Campus in the Black Box Theater. If you are a Southeast student and would like to enter the pageant, please call or email Shana Lewis at 606-589-3019 or slewis@kctc.edu.

The 606 Gaming Lounge will be hosting a Super Smash Bros. Melee Tournament on March 7 at Moonbow Tipple Coffee & Sweets in Harlan from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Prizes for first, second and third place will be awarded. Ages eight and up are invited to compete against players in Super Smash Bros. Melee on GameCube. To pre-register, call 606-909-1934 for more details.
Studio 606 will be hosting a Dance Grey Charity event in memory of Steve Morris on March 7 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. All proceeds will be donated to Grey Matters. This is open to the public and all ages with a minimum of $5 donation per person. (Not a dance class, but more so a dance party!)

The office of Senator Rand Paul is hosting a town hall with featured guests from the Mountain Home and Lexington VA Health Care Systems at the Harlan Center on March 17 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. This event provides event provides veterans from Harlan, Letcher, Bell, Whitley, Perry, Leslie, Clay, and Knox counties information on VA healthcare and an opportunity to address individual needs. The Harlan County High School Dance Team will have a pre-tryout open gym (optional) in the HCHS gym from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on April 7 and 9. Those interested in joining the dance team or to just get an idea of what dance is all about are invited to attend. The event is mandatory for current dancers. The Southeast Community College Choir has begun Spring Term Rehearsals. Meeting each Tuesday night at 7 p.m., the choir alternates rehearsals between the Harlan Episcopal Church, in Harlan, and the Choir Room of the SKCTCS Cumberland Campus. All singers who enjoy choir participation are invited to join. College students enrolled at SKCTC may also earn college credit for the class.
Works that the choir will perform at the May 2 and 3 concert dates will be chosen from the following list: The Terrible Tale of Tom Gilligan, Fiddler Man, Soldier Boy, a song cycle by John Rutter, O Magnum Mysterium by Victoria, Sicut cervus by Palestrina, Alleluia by Randall Thompson, Come to the Music by Joseph M. Martin, Panis Angelicus by Cesar Franck, The Road Not Taken and Choose Something Like a Star by Robert Frost/Randall Thompson, and Ubi Caritas by Maurice Durufle.

With Love from Harlan, a local nonprofit organization, is now providing weekend meals (except the last Sunday of each month) at Christ Church in Harlan, across from Harlan High School. Meals are served from 2-3 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

Several Harlan churches are sponsoring vesper services beginning March 1 and continuing every Sunday during Lent at 5 p.m. Services are nondenominational, lay-led and feature scripture, prayer and music. Everyone is welcome to attend. The schedule is as follows: First Presbyterian Church, March 1; Harlan United Methodist Church, March 8; Christ Episcopal Church, March 15; Holy Trinity Catholic Church, March 22; Harlan United Methodist Church, March 29; and First Presbyterian Church, April 5 (Palm Sunday).

The American Red Cross is seeking volunteers with flexible schedules to respond to single- and multi-family home fires in the Lake Cumberland service area, which includes Harlan, Bell, Whitley and Knox counties. Red Cross Disaster Action Team volunteers respond to assist families with shelter, support and access to basic needs immediately following a home fire – often arriving on scene even as the fire is still burning. Free saliva-based drug testing kits are provided and sponsored through UNITE and Stand in the Gap Coalition (SIGCO). Give Me a Reason is designed for parents/guardians to use to talk with their children and randomly test them, which gives them a reason to say no when tempted or offered drugs. Kits can be obtained at 44 different distribution points throughout the tri-state area and at the SIGCO office, located at 325 Straight Creek Road, New Tazewell, Tennessee. Volunteers and friendly visitors are needed for the Kentucky Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program to enrich the lives of seniors in their long-term care facilities. A military support group for all active, separated or any former military men or women meets at 6:30 p.m. every first and third Monday of the month at the Middlesboro National Guard Armory, located on 30th Street.
