The Harlan County Board of Education held their regular meeting for December recently, taking time to honor a pair of students for their induction into the Frank Brittian Academic and Athletic Hall of Fame.

Shortly after board chairman Gary Farmer called the meeting to order, Harlan County Schools Superintendent Brent Roark advised the board of the most recent Frank Brittian Academic and Athletic Hall of Fame Honorees, Caleb Rose and Dillon Scott.

Roark noted the honorees are two recent Harlan County Schools graduates.

“Tonight, we will introduce Caleb Rose and Dillon Scott as they become the 51st and 52nd students to be inducted into the hall of fame,” Roark said. “The criteria for admission is designed to honor elite students of the district, considering all aspects of the education process.”

Board member Scott Sherman provided some details on the honorees’ individual achievements.

“Caleb Rose was the valedictorian of his graduating class,” Sherman said. “He took part in multiple dual credit and honors courses. He was a 2022 Kentucky Governor’s Scholar and a 2021 Rogers Scholar.”

Among other distinctions, Rose was the editor-in-chief of the yearbook, a member of the academic team, an Eagle Scout, and a member of the National Honor Society.

Rose was presented with a plaque commemorating his achievement. Sherman then moved on to the night’s other honoree.

“Dillon Scott was valedictorian of his graduating class,” Sherman said. “He was president of the National Honor Society, and treasurer of the Beta club, co-president of the Den Keepers, a member of Gear Up, Gifted and Talented, and the Technology Student Association.”

Among other distinctions, Scott contributed to his community through working with the Empty Stocking Fund and assisting in teaching Club 180 coding camps. He received multiple scholarships and numerous academic awards.

Scott was then presented with a plaque for his achievements.

Following the presentations, the board moved on to other business.

During his report, Roark updated the board concerning ongoing projects.

“The HVAC upgrade is all but complete,” Roark said. “There are a couple of minor things.”

According to Roark, while there may have been some issues with temperatures inside some buildings due to settings on the thermostats, the thermostats are now under control.

“Our guys took control of the thermostats today,” Roark said. “The set points were a little wide on them; that’s why they took a little while to kick on and a little while to turn off.”

Roark mentioned work on the field house at the high school is in progress, and a recent dress code change is being received positively.

“The dress code changes you guys made was awesome; I got more compliments on that than anything the board has ever done,” Roark said. “Everywhere I went, they were very appreciative for that and for casual Friday.”

In other board activity:

· The board approved a project closeout for Wallins Elementary.

· A second reading of a revised district dress code for employees was approved.

· The board approved the monthly financial report.

· The board gave permission to award a bid for cafeteria chairs.
