2 arrested following drug investigation

A man and woman are facing charges including drug trafficking following an investigation by the Harlan County Sheriff’s Office.

James Johnson, 39, of Evarts, and Courtney Gooden, 31, of Kenvir, were arrested on April 1, by the Harlan County Sheriff’s Office.

According to a press release, Harlan County Sheriff’s Deputies Jacob Wilcher and Kevin Davis along with city of Evarts Assistant Police Chief Bryan Napier went to a Kenvir residence to serve multiple drug trafficking indictment warrants obtained due to a HCSO investigation. Police made entry into the residence, arresting the two individuals without incident.

Johnson was indicted for first-degree trafficking a controlled substance (methamphetamine). He was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center on a $5,000 full cash bond.

Gooden was indicted for first-degree trafficking a controlled substance (methamphetamine). She was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center on a $5,000 full cash bond.

  • Jennifer Wilson, 38, of Baxter, was arrested by Kentucky State Police on April 30. She was charged with theft by unlawful taking under $10,000, first-degree fleeing or evading police, reckless driving, first-degree criminal mischief, and improper passing. Wilson was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center;
  • William Russell, 30, of Harlan, was arrested by Kentucky State Police on April 5. He was charged with first-degree strangulation, fourth-degree assault, and third-degree terroristic threatening. Russell was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center;
  • Melissa Pace, 35, of LeJunior, was arrested by the HCSO on April 6. She was charged with first-degree trafficking a controlled substance (three counts). Pace was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center;
  • Brian Johnson, 42, of Jenkins, was arrested by the HCSO on April 6. He was charged with first-degree strangulation, and fourth-degree assault. Johnson was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center;
  • Olivia Evans, 19, of Hulen, was arrested by Kentucky State Police on April 6. She was charged with first-degree trafficking a controlled substance (two counts). Evans was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center.
