Submissions should be received no later than four business days prior to the event. If received in time, it will be published one or two days prior to the event. The Harlan County Celebrates Christmas Light Display will open Nov. 29 at the Shriners Fairgrounds in Putney. Bring your family and enjoy lights and music (streamed through an FM channel in your vehicle) every Thursday, Friday and Saturday throughout the season from 6 to 9:30 p.m. In addition, the display will be open on Dec. 16-18 (Monday through Wednesday) and Christmas Eve. The display, which is sponsored and maintained by Harlan County Christian School, is free to the public; however, donations are appreciated. To sponsor a light display, call 606-574-1900.

DEC. 5-JAN. 8

Harlan Tourism invites you to glide into fun as the Downtown Ice Rink come to Harlan for its second season. Open to skaters from Dec. 5 to Jan. 8. There are special rates for private parties, groups, field trips, etc. For more information, call 606-573-4156.

DEC. 6

The Tri-City Christmas Parade will be held at 5 p.m. on Dec. 6 along Main Street in Cumberland featuring floats, music, Santa Claus and his elves. This year’s theme is “My Christmas Wish.” For more information, call 606-589-2106.

Movie Night at Benham Coal Miners’ Memorial Theater will be held on Dec. 6. “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” begins at 7 p.m. Admission is a $2 donation.

DEC. 7

Christmas at the Center will once again be held in conjunction with the Harlan County Christmas Parade — experience a day full of Christmas magic in downtown Harlan. The Harlan Center will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with vendors and crafters inside. The Rosspoint Little Dancers will perform at 1 p.m. Santa and Mrs. Claus will be on hand in the Harlan Center for photos from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Christmas is just around the corner and the Harlan Christmas Parade is scheduled for Dec. 7 in downtown Harlan, presented by Harlan Tourism. Lineup begins at 4:30 p.m. with the parade at 5:30 p.m. The parade route will remain the same as throughout the last few years. This year’s theme is “What Christmas Means to Me.” Prizes will be awarded for: Best Children’s Float ($100); Best Religious Float ($100), Best Theme ($100), Harlan Tourism Award ($100), Best Scouting ($100) and Grand Prize ($500). Now is a great time to begin planning your parade entry with your team, church, organization, business, or family. Applications can be picked up at the Harlan Center. The U.S. Army Kentucky National Guard, Alpha Company, will host an open house at 3 p.m. on Dec. 7 at the Harlan National Guard Armory. Prior to the open house soldier will deliver items via a ruck march through Harlan to Christ’s Hands, beginning at 8 a.m.

Enjoy Breakfast with Santa at Benham Schoolhouse Inn on Dec. 7 beginning at 9 a.m. Kids will also enjoy cookie decorating, crafts and singing — pajamas welcome. For more information including cost, contact the inn at 606-848-3000.

A Gingerbread House Contest will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. on Dec. 7 at the Lynch Depot. Create your own gingerbread house; trophies awarded for first, second and third places. There is a $10 fee. To RSVP, call 606-894-0007.

Festival of Trees and Open House at the Kentucky Coal Museum will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Dec. 7 featuring over 80 beautiful Christmas trees, refreshments, live entertainment, Santa and Mrs. Claus, Grinch, Whoville and more.

The Cumberland Gap Artists Co-op will host a Victorian Christmas from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Dec. 7 in the historic town of Cumberland Gap on Colwyn Avenue.

DEC. 8

The Southeast Community Choir will present a holiday concert beginning at 3 p.m. on Dec. 8 at Christ Episcopal Church in Harlan.

The annual Nativity Play at Pine Mountain Settlement School will be held at 3 and 7 p.m. on Dec. 8 in the chapel. Doors open 30 minutes before each performance for special music. Admission is free.

The Evarts Christmas Parade will begin at 2 p.m. on Dec. 8. This year’s theme is “Christmas Traditions.” Lineup will start at Evarts Elementary School at 1 p.m. Grand prize for overall best float, $250; first place (must match theme), $150; second place (must match theme), $100. The American Red Cross is seeking volunteers with flexible schedules to respond to single- and multi-family home fires in the Lake Cumberland service area, which includes Harlan, Bell, Whitley and Knox counties. Red Cross Disaster Action Team volunteers respond to assist families with shelter, support and access to basic needs immediately following a home fire – often arriving on scene even as the fire is still burning. Give Me a Reason is designed for parents/guardians to use to talk with their children and randomly test them, which gives them a reason to say no when tempted or offered drugs. Volunteers and friendly visitors are needed for the Kentucky Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program to enrich the lives of seniors in their long-term care facilities. A military support group for all active, separated or any former military men or women meets at 6:30 p.m. every first and third Monday of the month at the Middlesboro National Guard Armory, located on 30th Street.
